Pokémon Legends Z-A is the next big Pokémon game, officially announced by The Pokémon Company on Pokémon Day 2024. It’s a brand-new adventure set in a futuristic version of Lumiose City, located in the Kalos region. This game follows the popular Pokémon Legends: Arceus and will offer open-world gameplay, new mechanics, and the exciting return of Mega Evolution!

Here’s everything we know (and what you can expect) from Pokémon Legends Z-A, coming in 2025.

Release Date Announced:

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have confirmed that Pokémon Legends Z‑A will launch on October 16, 2025, across both the original Nintendo Switch and the newly released Switch 2 platform. The enhanced Switch 2 Edition includes improved graphics and can be upgraded via a digital pack. Alongside the date, new gameplay information, special merchandise, and the timing for this summer’s Pokémon Presents event have also been unveiled.

Preorders - What You Should Know:

Preorders have officially opened for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set to launch this October. You can reserve your copy for either the Nintendo Switch or the upcoming Switch 2 through the Pokémon Center website. Both physical and digital formats are available, though special editions haven’t been announced yet. Early buyers will receive a few preorder bonuses, including:

⭐ 100 Poké Balls (available with the digital version only)

Mega Evolution Returns — Featuring Mega Dragonite!

One of the most exciting reveals is the return of Mega Evolution —a feature first introduced in X and Y. The game introduces 27 new Mega-Evolved Pokémon, with Mega Dragonite confirmed among them. These “Rogue Mega Evolutions” can appear in open areas, offering dynamic battles and rare encounters. In Lumiose City, certain Pokémon are capable of undergoing Mega Evolution—a powerful transformation that goes beyond regular Evolution. Strategically triggering Mega Evolution in battle can significantly increase your chances of winning.

Deeper Gameplay and Player Customization:

Pokémon Legends Z-A builds on Arceus’s open-world system with real-time battles, freedom of movement, and urban zones called “Wild Zones” inside the city. A key addition this time is player customization—offering more choices in outfits, hairstyles, accessories, and possibly even expressions or animations to reflect your unique trainer persona.

Visit the salon in Lumiose City to change your hair and makeup, or shop at boutiques to buy and customize clothing. You can also style your Furfrou by visiting Mirte. Your chosen gender affects your ally at Hotel Z—Taunie for male characters and Urbain for female—but all customization options appear to be gender-neutral, allowing full creative freedom.

New Story in Lumiose City:

Pokémon Legends: Z‑A sets its story entirely withinLumiose City, recently transformed by a sweeping urban redevelopment plan led by Quasartico Inc. This initiative aims to create a harmonious environment where humans and Pokémon coexist peacefully, blending bustling urban life with verdant parks, waterfronts, and rewilding zones.

You begin your journey by staying at Hotel Z, run by AZ, a mysterious figure claiming to be 3,000 years old and accompanied by the enigmatic Eternal Flower Floette. From here, you'll meet your first city guide and rival—Urbain or Taunie—and navigate through a city full of hidden paths, rooftop rendezvous, and evolving districts. Players become part of a grand narrative: as Lumiose City reshapes itself, they must engage with local residents, take on redevelopment side quests that shape neighborhoods, and uncover the secrets behind Rogue Mega Evolutions appearing in said zones. The presence of Zygarde, an ancient balancing Legendary linked to the ecosystem, suggests deeper themes of fragile harmony between progress and nature.
