The Dragon Ball fighting-game community has been set ablaze once again — Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO is officially rewriting franchise history. Bandai Namco’s latest entry in the legendary Budokai Tenkaichi series has not only smashed sales records but is now expanding its reach to Nintendo’s platforms, with both Switch and Switch 2 releases confirmed for later this year.
According to the official announcement by Bandai Namco, Sparking! ZERO has sold more than 5 million units worldwide, and is now described as the fastest-selling Dragon Ball console game ever. One press release notes that the game sold over 3 million copies in the first 24 hours after launch. These figures mark a significant achievement in the fighting-game and anime-licence space.

Developed by Spike Chunsoft and published by Bandai Namco, Sparking! ZERO marks the first new Budokai Tenkaichi-style game in nearly two decades. Its explosive success is attributed to a mix of nostalgia, cutting-edge visuals powered by Unreal Engine 5, and an unprecedented playable roster that appeals to fans across generations of the series.
The game features an exceptionally large playable roster. According to the Nintendo product page, the base game version includes over 180 fighters, covering characters from Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball GT, and selected Dragon Ball movies. Additional reporting suggests the total roster (including post-launch DLC) has now soared to 208 characters, making this one of the largest rosters seen in a modern fighting game. The roster size is a major selling point. As Nintendo’s store page puts it:
“THE BIGGEST ROSTER IN HISTORY — Unleash the strength of over 180 fighters from Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball GT, and selected Dragon Ball movies...”
While the game initially launched for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (via Steam) on October 11 2024, Bandai Namco has now confirmed that a Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 version will arrive on November 14, 2025 (with the Japanese release on November 13) worldwide.

✔️ The Switch versions will support both local and online multiplayer, and will include motion-control support suitable to Joy-Con use.
✔️ The Switch / Switch 2 version will receive an update enabling an “enhanced version” when played on Switch 2 hardware—improving clarity, richer detail for characters/backgrounds—but with a caveat: certain save data (battle replays, edit data, online records) will not carry over from the Switch version when updating to the Switch 2 updated version.
✔️ A specific notice from Bandai Namco outlines that the Switch versions include most free updates up to January 21, 2025 (for the other platforms).
With record-breaking sales, a roster exceeding 200 characters, and new releases for both Switch and Switch 2, Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO has cemented itself as the most ambitious Dragon Ball fighting game ever made. It blends old-school chaos with next-gen polish, proving that the Budokai Tenkaichi formula still resonates today. As the November 2025 release approaches for Nintendo players, one thing is clear: Sparking! ZERO isn’t just a comeback — it’s a full-power Super Saiyan revival for the Dragon Ball gaming legacy.
